Big News! Google, is set to launch Google Station (“fast Wi-Fi for everyone”) — a Google service that allows partners to roll out Wi-Fi hotspots in the public places in South Africa. The ‘fast Wi-Fi for everyone’ hotspots will be located in popular areas like government buildings, bus stations, office complexes and hospitals. Google intends to launch over 100 Google Station Wi-Fi sites in South Africa by September 2019. Nice initiative!
Guess who got bigger? DPO Group, a Nairobi-based payment services provider, has acquired ownership of South Africa’s fintech platform, PayFast at an undisclosed amount. DPO Group will leverage the deal to serve over 100,000 merchants across 18 African markets. DPO’s services will also be available to both DPO Group and PayFast merchants on a single platform. Congratulations to DPO Group!
In a bid to foster Financial Inclusion, MTN Nigeria has received a license to offer financial services to Nigerians from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The license will grant the telco access to offer financial services to the unbanked, underbanked and banked through its subsidiary, Yello Digital Financial Services Limited (YDFS).
Also, Techstars—an American seed accelerator, has secured $42 million funding in a round led by SVB Financial Group. They plan to leverage the newly secured funding to expand globally and also fund more seed-stage accelerators, global startup ecosystem activations, corporate innovation, and entrepreneur-focused events. The full details are on the blog, do check it.
Finally, Microsoft is set to integrate Intune—its Enterprise Mobility Management solution, with eSIM Device Enablement Service (eDES) from G+D Mobile Security. This integration will grant IT departments access to centrally manage the mobile connections of eSIM-enabled end devices that belong to their companies and also activate, modify and manage Mobile contracts for Windows devices with eSIM, seamlessly.
