Instagram said that it is developing new ways to confirm that users are 18 years old in the United States.
Instagram is demanding users who try to change their age from under 18 to 18 or older to verify their age by posting a photo ID, taking a video selfie, or asking friends who know them to do so. This is being done to allay lawmakers’ and parents’ concerns.
As part of a partnership with Yoti, a London-based firm that uses artificial intelligence to deduce a person’s age from facial traits, Instagram, owned by Meta, has announced that it will transmit video selfies to Yoti for analysis.
According to Meta, other than age, no additional identification can be recognized by the technology.
Once the user’s age has been verified, Yoti and Meta will erase their video selfies, the business added.
The stricter age restrictions are the result of studies linking Instagram use to young users’ mental health.
After receiving criticism, the firm released more parental control tools including Family Center.
The social networking site claimed that the measures were motivated by the idea that both teens and adults should enjoy age-appropriate experiences on the site.
Instagram started requesting users’ ages in 2019 while registering. Additionally, you must be at least 13 years old to register.
