Let’s gist about kickstarting a career in tech with little or no experience. Before the tips, we have to familiarize ourselves with the ‘why’.

Why are people opting for careers in tech?

Everybody is finding ways of doing things in the ‘techy way’. According to the World Economic Forum‘s latest Future of Jobs report, the jobs of the future are set to grow by 51% and will present 6.1 million job opportunities globally.

In a nutshell, we need to reskill 1 billion people by 2030 and prepare the workforce with tech and specialized interpersonal skills. It is time to find out how to position for the future without having to lose your job.

Research and Make up your mind

The first thing you need to do is to research and understand the many available options. Next is to make up your mind. Decide that you want to venture into tech before jumping at it. This is because starting a career in tech requires more than a traditional college degree; it takes determination to be able to unlearn and learn.

Learn Daily

It would be best if you also dedicate time to learn daily. Do you have the tenacity it takes to be a programmer, for example? Are you willing to commit odd hours in front of the computer to meet intense deadlines? If yes, you need to put away excuses and start practicing daily. Start with videos, online resources, tutorials, and books.

Enroll in a free course or if you can, pay for a certified program. Enrolling in a degree program will only give you a theoretical background, but go a step further with self-taught hands-on skills.

Register for Hackathons and Bootcamps

The best way to approach a career in tech is from a community setting. Being a part of a community will give you all the encouragement and support you need during the learning phase. There are supervisors to guide and correct you along the line. Bootcamps offer an accelerated learning experience in a short time.

Refine your Digital Skills

Getting a sustainable job requires substantial expertise in digital technologies. These skills are critical for in-demand roles across all emerging professions. The digital skills you should master include data manipulation, data mining, digital marketing, programming, game development, artificial intelligence cloud computing, etc. Decide what type of tech skills that will prepare you for that future job.

Contribute to Open-source projects

Register on online communities and contribute to open source projects. This will help make your work visible and connect you to other techies around the world. Adding to online projects will allow you to practice what you’ve learned.

The adoption of new technologies will give rise to higher demand for tech roles at the forefront of Data and Artificial Intelligence, as well as new roles in Engineering, Cloud Computing, and Product Development. Carve a niche for yourself and get ready for the future. Whatever you choose, never stop learning online and offline.
